Abstract:
fotobiorreactores (FBR) y Raceways, respectivamente.
Abstract
The interest in biodiesel generation from microalgae is because they have a rapid
generation of biomass and high lipid content in their cell structure. Growth of microalgae
can be carried out in enclosed photobioreactors or Raceway ponds. The main advantage
of enclosed photobioreactors is the control of biomass growth carbon dioxide, water,
nutrients, light intensity, pH and temperature. However it represents high costs of
investment, operation and scaling problems. The most commercially viable method of algal
production is the Raceway ponds; the advantages of raceway ponds are minimal costs
needed to operate and minimal energy inputs needed to run the system. Raceway
systems are easy to maintain and clean, higher cell densities and the disadvantages of
Raceway ponds are low productivity, hard to control environmental conditions and as the
system is so exposed it can result in the cultures being exposed to contamination.
In this present work was constructed a semiclosed raceway pond, to determine the effect
of the cover material and geometry; using greenhouses overcomes the problem about
evaporation, rainfall and contamination, allowing for the best productivity of Chlorococcum
humicola. Chloroccocum humicola were cultured in Bold 's Basal Medium raceway ponds
of 10 L containing 7 L of culture medium, which were evaluated three covers (even span,
arch and uneven span) and two different materials (rigid and tri-layer polyethylene film),
biomass productivity, carbohydrates, proteins, lipid and contamination were determined,
establishing that the cover had an effect on the light intensity, temperature, evaporation
and pollution. The solar radiation received in semiclosed raceway pond was 50% lower
than open raceway pond. The results suggest statistically significant difference on the
reduction of evaporation in semiclosed raceway pond by up to 50%. Biomass was higher
in all the systems with three-layer flexible material, even though the received light intensity
was lower compared to the rigid material; an effect due to the material of the covers was
established. Finally, no significant effect of materials and geometries in carbohydrates,
proteins and lipids the content (p ≥ 0.05)…..
