Abstract:
This study aims to determine the mode interlaminar fracture energy release rate of a bidirectional epoxy-carbon composite material through the calculation of the fatigue delamination growth rate applying the modified law of Paris for composite materials. The composite plate is made of a bidirectional carbon fiber woven and an epoxy resin; the manufacture was following the method of vacuum bag. In the composite plate was induced an artificial delamination at a half of the thickness in order to simulate a pre-existing crack. Subsequently, double cantilever beams specimens were cut with the dimensions of 100 mm long, 25 mm width and 4 mm of thickness. The experimentation consisted in perform cuasi-static tests in tensile opening displacement mode, according the ASTM D5528 standard to determine the critic interlaminar fracture toughness in Mode I. The fatigue test were carry out with different values of load ratio of 0.1, 0.5 and 0.7, following the ASTM D6115 standard and it was possible to estimate the fatigue delamination growth rate of the material. During dynamic tests, the progress of the delamination was frequently monitored respect the number of cycles with an optical microscope. With the objective to correlate the failure mechanisms with the load ratio and differentiate the topographic characteristics of the fatigue failure respect the cuasi-static failure, it was done the fractographic examination by visual inspection and SEM. This methodology is effective because the results allowed to correlate the fatigue delamination growth rate with the interlaminar fracture energy release rate applying the modified law of Paris, obtaining the material constants associated to the environment sensitivity and the stress sensitivity in the tip of the crack
