Abstract
In this work, two ductile irons were manufactured, unalloyed and alloyed with Ni. Three plates with different thickness were obtained 2/6, 3/6 and 6/6 with high nodule count and nodularity. The ductile cast iron unalloyed showed a pearlitic-ferritic matrix with eutectic carbides and nodule density of 357 nod/mm2 to the thickness of 2/6. The Ni addition to ductile cast iron allowed a microstructure refination and avoids the eutectic carbides formation, obtaining a pearlitic-ferritic matrix for the three thickness. The nodule density was increased almost twice for the three thickness, it was obtained 606 nod/mm2 with a size 28.1 µm for the 2/6 plate of thickness while the average spheroidicity was increased from 83 to 90%. The best mechanical properties were obtained in ductile cast iron alloyed with Ni mainly for the 2/6 plate of thickness; 274 HB, ultimate strength 650 MPa, 2.046% elongation.
It was obtained ADI´s alloyed with Ni by the heat treatment. The ausferritic matrix was obtained at 70 min after the austempering heat treatment, this time represents the window process. Ausferritic microstructures were obtained for the three plate thickness and it is show that the high nodule count allows an increase in the high carbon austenite retained, reaching maximum values of 10.96% for the 2/6 thickness. The best mechanical properties were obtained for the lower thickness of 2/6, this are: 387.68 HB, ultimate strength 814 MPa and 1.238% elongation.
