Abstract
In this work the experimental determination of the density of CO2 – ethanol – methane and CO2 – ethanol – ethane mixtures, as a function of temperature T, pressure p and composition x is presented. The measurement was performed using the vibrating tube densitometry technique (VTD), in the temperature range of 293 to 373.15 K, pressure from 10 to 70 MPa. And compositions at 1, 5 and 10 % weight of light gas (methane and ethane) in CO2 – ethanol mixture at a ratio of 10 % weight of ethanol. A total of 12 isotherms were performed and over 160 pρT data for each mixture were obtained. Validation of the methodology for preparing gaseous mixtures was performed by successive weighing, manipulating the p – v – T conditions with help of equations of state for the pure fluids [1]. An expanded uncertainty, in a range of 5 x 10^-5 to 20 x 10^-5 for CO2 – ethanol – methane mixture, was obtained. For CO2 – ethanol – ethane mixture the obtained expanded uncertainty resulted in a range between 5 x 10^-5 and 20 x 10^-5 in composition. Calibration of the vibrating tube was implemented using the Forced Path Mechanical Calibration (FPMC) model [2], which requires measure the vibration period of the tube under vacuum and full with reference fluid, using in this study HPLC grade water and its equation of state known as IAPWS-95 acronym for International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam. The pressure transducer was calibrated with a deadweight tester. It was determined that the maximum pressure uncertainty of
± 0.03 bar is achieved during the measurements with the transducer. Furthermore the temperature probe was calibrated according to the International Temperature Scale (ITS-90). Before the determination of the thermodynamic properties for the mixtures in this work, it was necessary to validate a methodology for the measurement of gas properties. Therefore the density of methane and ethane with an ultrahigh purity of 99.999% was measured, from 0.1 to 40 MPa for ethane and up to 70 MPa for methane. The comparison between obtained results and the reference equations, showed inconsistent densities at low pressures (< 2 MPa). Based on this situation a hypothesis about the influence that vibration period under vacuum have over densities at low pressure was tested. Such tests did not allowed to conclude definitively and suggest more studies. Finally the p – ρ – T properties of CO2 – ethanol – methane and CO2 – ethanol – ethane mixtures, were represented by a model based on a modified GERG-2008 equation, developing an adjustment to the residual part of the Helmholtz free energy. Relative errors obtained between experimental data and the model were up to ± 3% in density at pressures below 20
MPa, while for higher pressures errors of ± 0.5% were obtained in density.
