sistema Fe-10%Ni-15%Al.
ABSTRACT: Fe-Ni-Al ferritic alloys have a great potential for applications at high temperature due to the precipitation of the ordered β´ (NiAl) phase, the coarsening process of these precipitates is an important issue to keep the mechanical properties at high temperatures. This work analyzes the Cu effect on the coarsening kinetic of the β´ precipitates in a ferritic matrix. To reach this goal, the Fe-10%Ni-15%Al-2.5%Cu and Fe-10%Ni-15%Al-5%Cu alloys were fabricated and they were studied by the conventional method. The alloys were homogenized at 1100°C for 24 h and then they were aged at 850 and 900°C for different times. On the other hand, the compositional gradient method was applied by a diffusion couple of Fe-10%Ni-15%Al and Fe-10%Ni-15%Al-28%Cu alloys. The diffusion couple was diffusion annealed at 1050°C for 7 days and aged at 900°C for 0.5h. The structural, microstructural and mechanical characterization was carried out by SEM, HRSEM, TEM, Vickers hardness measurements and nanoindentation. The evolution in size and morphology permit distinguish two kinds of precipitates: (i) primary precipitates which are aligned preferential in the matrix <100> directions; and (ii) secondary precipitates with interfaces at 45° with respect to the interfaces of the primary precipitates. The chemical analysis by EDS showed a Cu and Al compositional difference between both kinds of precipitates. The morphology evolution in the Fe-10%Ni-15%Al-2.5%Cu alloy was as follows: cuboids rectangular parallelepipeds and cuboids rectangular parallelepipeds parallelepipeds with irregular interfaces for the primary and secondary precipitates, respectively. For the Fe-10%Ni-15%Al-5%Cu alloy, cuboids rectangular parallelepipeds needles and cuboids parallelepipeds with irregular interfaces, for the primary and secondary precipitates, respectively. A lineal dependence of the equivalent radii with respect to the time was observed for both alloys. The coarsening mechanism is atomic diffusion-controlled attributed to the values of the time exponent about 0.24-0.38 which are close to 1/3 as predicted by LSW theory. Additionally, the coarsening kinetic enhances as the Cu and temperature is increased. The kinetic constants were 5.154x104 and 1.789 x105 nm3/h for the Fe-10%Ni-15%Al-2.5%Cu alloy; and 3.826x105 and 8.041 x106 nm3/h for the Fe-10%Ni-15%Al-5%Cu alloy, at 850 and 900°C, respectively. The hardness and nanoindentation measurements showed that the addition of 5%Cu promotes a higher mechanical hardening. Finally, the compositional gradient method results allow elucidating the copper effects on the size, morphology evolution of the precipitates and the mechanical properties in the Fe-10%Ni-15%Al system.
