Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The mesoporous solid SBA-15 was synthesized by a process of hydrolysis-condensation of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as silicon precursor and the copolymer P123 [(PEO)70(PPO)20(PEO)70] as structural template. The bifunctional catalysts Pt/H3PW12O40/SBA-15 were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation method, using heteropolyacid H3PW12O40 as acid promoter varying from 5 wt% to 10, 20, 30 and 40 wt%, and platinum chloroplatinic acid (H2PtCl6 ) as 1 wt% Pt precursor.
The structure and surface characteristics of SBA-15 and Pt/H3PW12O40/SBA-15 catalysts were characterized using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), with the results the hexagonal crystal structure is confirmed. The surface morphology and Pt particles distribution were determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Textural characteristics were analyzed by N2 physisorption, which showed isotherms type IV and hysteresis curves type I, characteristics of the mesoporous materials. The surface areas of the catalysts were in the range of 715- 459 m2/g and pore volumes about 1.15 - 0.75 cm3/g. The surface acidity was analized by in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic technique using pyridine as molecular probe. Results show that both Brönsted and Lewis acid sites are present in all the catalysts.
These catalysts with strong acidity and ordered mesoporous structure and large surface area will be used for the n-heptane isomerization. In the isomer products, 3-methyl hexane, 2,3–methyl-hexane and 2,2-dimethyl pentane were formed but the 2,2- dimethyl pentane was the major product. Strong surface acidity of the catalysts seem benefit the isomerization. The Pt/30wt%HPW/SBA-15 showed the best activity and the catalyst Pt/20wt%HPW/SBA-15 showed better selectivity.
