ABSTRACT:
During the last decade, the percentage of failures due to the incorrect operation of
transportation pipelines has steadily increased worldwide. The main reason behind this
increase, in statistical terms, can be related to the fact that the occurrence of corrosion-
and mechanical damage-related pipeline failures has dramatically decreased as the result
of the maintenance policies implemented in the oil and gas industry in the past 20-30
years. In spite of their increasingly significance in pipeline safety statistics, operation
related failures are far from being correctly addressed by pipeline design, integrity, and
risk management procedures and codes. There is a clear need for new reliability
methodologies capable of addressing the threats posed to transportation pipelines by
incorrect operation.
In this work a new reliability methodology is presented and illustrated for the estimation
of the probability of failure and failure index associated with incorrect operation of
corroding transportation pipelines. In the proposed methodology a pipeline (fluid) flow
simulation software (AFT Impulse 3.0) is used to determine the statistical distribution of
operating overpressures due to hydraulic transient or waterhammer events that result
from the inadequate operation of components in a pipeline such as valves and pumps. To
obtain such a distribution, a large number of component-manipulation scenarios are
simulated using the above referred software. For each one of these scenarios, the
resulting stationary and transient pressure profile is simulated along the entire pipeline
under analysis. A probability of occurrence is assigned to each simulated profile according
to its likelihood over the expected life of the pipeline. At each pipeline section, the
distribution of operating pressure that results when all the scenarios are accounted for is
used as the distribution of the load, which is later input into a traditional load-resistance
reliability methodology. The resistance of a pipeline section affected by corrosion is given by the pressure that it
can sustain or failure pressure. This pressure is computed using the PCORRC failure
equation, which is a plastic collapse failure model. The statistical distribution of the failure
pressure is estimated from the uncertainty in the variables used to feed PCORRC. The
distributions of the load (operating pressure) and resistance (failure pressure) are used to
estimate, through Monte Carlo simulations, the probability of failure and failure index of
the pipeline under analysis. The time evolution of the pipeline reliability is determined
from the expected change in size of the corrosion defects as the pipeline service time
increases.
The application of the developed methodology is illustrated for an oil pipeline which, for
the sake of simplicity, has a reduced number of components. The results of this illustration
example corroborate that the methodology is suitable for considering the anomalous
operating conditions that arise from the unexpected, incorrect manipulations of
components of transporting pipelines. It is shown that these conditions could
unexpectedly compromise the reliability of the pipeline to levels which are considered
intolerable for transporting pipelines. This situation can only be evidenced by using the
proposed methodology, which allows pipeline integrity analysts not only addressing these
otherwise unpredictable reliability issues, but also taking into account other pipeline
integrity and risk aspects which are extremely difficult to model, such as human reliability.
