ABSTRACT:
In the last 20 years, the interest in growing pitahaya has increased in several countries such as Vietnam, Colombia, Nicaragua, Israel, Taiwan and Mexico. In this country, the species “Hylocereus undatus” is mainly cultivated in the Yucatan Peninsula, Quintana Roo, Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Oaxaca, Puebla, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Michoacán, Nayarit and Baja California. These plants are characterized by to be climbing cactuses, from semi-warm climates, that produce oval fruits with external scales. The crop of these plants, are in continuing expansion due to their great adaptation, to the small amount of water they require and the high sale value of acquisition. In Santiago Tangamandapio, Michoacan state it is a recent introduced crop, so its management and adaptation is unknown. In this research, the pitahaya vegetative development was evaluated, to answer the use of vermicompost and fertigation. For this purpose, it was set an experiment with 160 plants, coming from 2 species (Hylocereus undatus e H. ocamponis) 80 from each one, in an entirely random design, 8 treatments and 10 replications by which consist in: 100 ppm of N, P and K, vermicompost (50,100 and 150 ton per hectare), its combination and a control with only water. It was evaluated monthly the height of the plant, the number of stems buds and the total stems length, It was evaluated too the nutrimental content of stems. As a result, was obtained the effectiveness of two treatments (50 t ha-1 + 100 ppm of NPK) and (150 t ha-1 + 100 ppm of NPK), that helped to speed up the bud development, the stem elongation and, height of the plant. In the other hand, the plants that were applied the treatments, composed by the mix of vermicompost plus a chemical fertilizer, were those that had the highest concentrations of macro and microelements, mainly potassium, calcium and nitrogen. In conclusion, these plants respond to the application of organic amendments and fertigation.
