recinto cerrado.
ABSTRACT:
In recent years, very intense telluric events have caused damage to buildings in various
parts of the world. Thus, it is necessary to develop methods that allow the evaluation of the
structures before they are inhabited again. Since they can be damaged with cracks or
fissures which are not visible and represent a risk for the population due to the building could
be at risk of collapse. In this way, it is necessary to study and propose new evaluation
methods of structures which allow to avoid human losses.
Due to Mexico’s geographical location, It’s located within the Pacific Ring of Fire, which often
presents earthquakes of considerable intensity. They are usually caused by landslides that
the Cocos Plate presents below the North American plate. The earthquakes damages which
took place on September 19 th, 21st in 1985 September 19th in 2017, are extremely
important.
After these seismic events, buildings may have fissures and cracks that are not visible to
the naked eye. Consequently the possibility of collapse may occur. For this reason an
acoustic method is proposed, It detects cracks and fissures that are not visible to the human
eye in enclosures of all types of geometry and size. In such a way, the following steps will
be done during the development of this thesis.
Three test cabins will be designed and built: for optimal conditions and crack.
The reverberation time of the cabin will be calculated in optimal conditions by three methods
that are, Sabine, Eyring and Millington Sette. Inorder to demonstrate that the cabin behaves
like a real enclosure taking in consideration the isolation, and appropriate acoustic
conditioning.
It will be measured with the application Rev Meter Pro with iOS 11 of the iPhone 6s the
reverberation time of the cabin in optimal conditions and will be compared with the calculated
reverberation time to observe the variations between both methods and check if the use of
the cabins is viable test.

iv
Measurements of sound pressure levels will be made with a sound level meter in each of
the test cabins to detect possible variations. The sound levels will be measured with the
Sound Meter application with iOS 11 of the iPhone 6s and the results will be compared with
those obtained with the sound level meter to observe if there is similarity between them.
The proposed method will be verified through fieldwork, firstly, with the measurements made
in the Signal and Systems Laboratory of the Postgraduate Studies and Research Section of
the Zacatenco School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, and in a room with an
controlled environment where alterations that replace the cracks in different sizes will be
generated.
Finally, a method of easy and immediate access to most people will be presented, which
allows assessing the conditions of an enclosure after a telluric event, to avoid the risk of
inhabiting it and subsequently collapsing. The method can be tested by means of a
smartphone that has a sound level meter application and in characterized rooms (measured
and with a range of constant sound levels), since there are methods that use expensive and
sophisticated equipment, and instead, in This work will only use the variation of the sound
to detect any crack or fissure in any enclosure.
