Abstract:
ABSTRACT: San Carlos, Chihuahua and Olmos, Coahuila formations in northern Mexico (Upper Cretaceous), host a large collection of angiosperm and gymnosperm permineralized woods. However, not many works have been undertaken on fossil conifers despite their abundance in these sites. We report on the occurrence of the genera Cupressinoxylon sp (Cupressaceae) in both the San Carlos Formation and the Olmos Formation. and Taxodioxylon sp. (Cupressaceae), in the Olmos Formation. We also present a new report of Agathoxylon sp., with a complete description and justification to its assignment to the Araucariaceae family. Of the material collected in 2016 and 2017, only the Cupressaceae family was represented, as evidenced by the Cluster analysis, which is the only shared element in the total of formations included in the megatermal zone of the north, central.sur of the USA and North of Mexico. The occurrence of the families Araucariaceae and Cupressaceae suggest that the floristic similarity between these formations has somewhat a geographic congruence and at the same time, it is an extension of the mesothermal tropical flora to the megatermal tropical flora, confirming on the idea that the majority of the Cretaceous plants evolved in a climate characterized by moderate to high temperatures with low precipitation.
