Abstract:
ABSTRACT: In Mexico, biomass and diversity studies of macroalgae communities relating to environmental factors remain insufficient, despite this; it’s well known that substratum and depth are factors that have influence in the spatial and temporal distribution of algae. The aim of this work is recognize the spatio-temporal variation of the community structure of benthic macroalgae in Xpicob and Villamar, Campeche, during three seasons, in relation to environmental variables with the biomass and diversity. The results indicate the presence of 74 taxa of marine algae with Florideophyceae having the greatest diversity with 36 taxa, followed by Ulvophyceae with 35 taxa, and finally Phaeophyceae with 3. Filamentous algae have the higher specific richness in the intertidal zone, meanwhile corticated and calcareous macrophytes are greater in number and biomass in the subtidal zone and greater depths (60-240 cm). In Xpicob, the highest diversity was found at greater depths, while in Villamar the central areas were the most diverse. Cluster analysis from biomass’ data formed three groups, the first consisting of Xpicob northern winds -dry, the second by Villamar northern winds-dry-rains and finally a group formed only by Xpicob’ rains. Otherwise, Xpicob’s alpha diversity and fairness were greatest during northern winds season, while lowest were dry season. Species exchange in each season in Xpicob was greater than 50%, however, the largest replacement occurred from dry rains (0.65), in contrast, in Villamar the replacement was less than 50%, having the largest exchange of dry to northern winds. The environmental factors that showed the greatest influence on the macroalgae biomass in the study area were temperature, salinity, rocky substrate and depth. The study revealed that each factor modulated some attribute in the community; however most of the factors affect the community as a whole and not in an isolated way. With the results obtained, it can be concluded that the macroalgae community of the study area is influenced by the environmental factors, producing a variation throughout the year, both in composition and biomass as well as the diversity.
