ABSTRACT:
The age, growth, sexual maturity and diet of R. guatemalensis and R. laticauda in the Oaxaca part of the Biosphere Reserve Tehuacán-Cuicatlán are described, in order to contribute with the formation of the scientific basis to propose alternatives for sustainable production and conservation. The age and growth (size and biomass) of the catfish was obtained by the Cassie method and the Bertalanffy growth equation respectively. Based on the potential relationship between size and biomass, the type of growth was obtained. Gonadal maturation was studied based on the Nikolsky scale. To confirm the season and breeding area of the females, the gonadosomatic and hepatosomatic index were used. The size of first maturity was calculated based on logistic curves and a software. Fecundity was estimated by the gravimetric method. The diet was analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Diversity, specialization and trophic overlap were estimated using the Shannon-Wiener, Levins and Pianka indices. The determination of age showed that the catfish studied had three age classes, by seasons of the year, by sub-basins and sexes. For the general population of R. guatemalensis the size and asymptotic weight were 319 mm and 173 g with a longevity of 10 years, while for R. laticauda they were 193 mm and 64 g with a longevity of 12 years. Both fish presented a variation of growth according to the season, by sub-basins (Quiotepec and Salado rivers) and by sex. The type of growth was negative allometric for R. laticauda and for most of the samples of R. guatemalensis, except in the dry season, where showed an isometric growth. The season of reproduction of the fish was wide because it covered the rainy season and the dry one, in addition they occupy as much the sub-basin of the Quiotepec river as the one of the Salado river to reproduce. Catfish mature sexually at an age ≥ 1 year. Mean absolute fertility was higher in R. guatemalensis (9 347 oocytes) than in R. laticauda (2 379 oocytes). The analysis of the diet suggests that catfish consume mainly aquatic invertebrates. The Shannon-Wiener and Levins index indicates that the fish showed a low-medium trophic diversity and a specialized diet. The Pianka index indicated a moderate-high overlap, derived from the consumption of abundant prey (Diptera and Ephemeroptera), suggesting that possibly there is no competition in the trophic dimension of the niche. The studied catfish follow an "r" selection and a seasonal strategy. The results of the present study contribute to a better understanding of the ecology of the catfish, and are important in the taking of protection measures in the studied area.
