ABSTRACT:
Tribology is the science that studies the wear, friction as well as the lubrication between pairs that are in contact and in relative movement. The main objective of this science is to propose solutions to reduce the consumption of materials and energy which impacts on a reduction of costs. These solutions, for example, can be from the replacement of new materials, treatments and high-performance surface coatings as well as the use of new lubricants and additives [1]. It is essential that the lubricants continuously must be improved to have the requirements of higher speed, load and temperature [2].
Furthermore, the characterization of lubricants by the four-ball test is essential. These tests are based on standards which have been established by associations as ASTM, DIN, and IP among others. This method has the purpose of evaluating the anti-wear properties, coefficient of friction and load capacity in greases and oils lubricants.
However, manufacturing and instrumenting this equipment is not an easy task, there is a large list of dependent parameters that must be controlled or they may influence on the experimental results as Hersey’s parameters (temperature, load, speed and viscosity) and others that are not very dependent, as the physical and chemical properties of the materials (mainly steel balls, solvents, contaminants, etc.).
Therefore, the purpose of this project was to develop the temperature, speed and load control system for a tribological equipment of four balls tests, it has already been developed in the tribological laboratory of the SEPI ESIME Zacatenco of the National Polytechnic Institute. Subsequently, the control system was validated in terms of repeatability and reproducibility of the method in the mentioned equipment according to a testing program that used three certifies greases and it was supported by the ASTM D2266 standard - Wear Test or No Extreme Pressure Test (NEP) and ASTM D2596 standard - Load Capacity Test or Extreme Pressure Test (EP).
