Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Obesity is a public health problem and an irrigation factor for the development of diseases such as type II diabetes, some cancers and cardiovascular diseases, pathologies that occupy the first places of cause of death in our country. At the national level, there are approximately 4 million children who are overweight and obese and 29% of the adolescent population are obese and at high risk of being obese adults. Treatment of this disease is complicated because its etiology has been described as multifactorial, and involves complex interactions between genetics and environmental factors such as sedentary lifestyle or inadequate eating habits. It has recently been postulated that among the different mechanisms that could explain the interindividual differences in the development of obesity, epigenetics is found and, within the genes that can be modified epigenetically is leptin, which participates in the development of obesity. For this reason the objective of this work is to establish if there is any association between the methylation profile of the LEP gene and leptin levels in adolescents with obesity and overweight as well as in their parents. The results obtained showed a positive correlation between patients with obesity and leptin levels, but a negative correlation was observed with the methylation profile of the LEP gene. Based on the above, we can conclude that leptin levels are related to the methylation profile and the degree of obesity.
