Abstract:
ABSTRACT: In this work MgAl2O4 magnesium spinel powders were synthesized by the sol-gel method using organic Mg(NO3)2 and organometallic precursors (Aluminum Trisecbutoxide), in the same way spinel powders were synthesized with the addition of commercial MgAl2O4 seeds during the sol-gel synthesis, the percentages of seeds were 0.025, 0.05 and 0.1% in final weight. The powders obtained from the dried gel for each experiment were calcined at different temperatures from 200 to 1300 ° C for two hours with a heating rate of 10 ° C / min to study the structural evolution of the dried gel until the spinel formation crystalline phase.
Spinel powders were also calcined without particle seeding and with MgAl2O4 particle seeding at different percentages from 4 hours and 8 hours to study the influence of MgAl2O4 particles during synthesis of spinel phase.
Alumina powders were also synthesized by the sol-gel technique using the same reagents as for the unseeded spinel except for the magnesium nitrate that was not necessary for this experiment. The results showed that the phase obtained during sol-gel process is boehmite, the objective of this experiment was to follow transition from boehmite to alumina formation because the boehmite phase appears in the dried gels of the synthesis unseeded spinel.
The powders obtained from dried gel were calcined from 200 to 1300 ° C for two hours and were characterized by the same techniques mentioned above.
The results shown in the synthesis without seeds of spinel MgAl2O4 shows that dried gel is composed of a mixture of boehmite and magnesium nitrate. The first traces of the spinel phase for this experiment appear at 300 ° C and crystallinity increases with increasing calcination temperature.
During heating at 800 °C the spinel shows an increase in crystallinity with respect to the powders treated below this temperature, as well as a surface area of 107 m2/g-1 being the highest surface area value with respect to the calcined powders at other temperatures.
The results of spinel synthesis with addition of MgAl2O4 particles show that the dried gel is composed of the same mixture of boehmite and magnesium nitrate for experiments with 0.025 and 0.05% of MgAl2O4 seeds, unlike the powders obtained in the experiment with 0.1% of MgAl2O4 seeds, the dried gel was composed of the mixture of boehmite, magnesium nitrate and traces of crystalline magnesium spinel.
The results of the three experiments with seeded MgAl2O4 particles show that seeds influence in a beneficial way to obtain the spinel phase. The crystalline spinel phase is obtained at 700 ° C for the three experiments with seeded particles of MgAl2O4, this represents a reduction of 100 °C in the calcination temperatura to obtain the crystalline phase unlike the seedless experiment.
Powders with 0.025% and 0.05% present phase formation from 300 °C with a higher crystalline definition than seedless spinel powders. With respect to the powders with 0.1% by weight of MgAl2O4 seeds, they have the phase formation from 300 ° C with greater definition according to the results shown in the characterization by x-ray diffraction.
