gastados.
ABSTRACT:
The final disposition of spent nuclear fuel presents some inconveniences in a
sustainable context since it has high levels of radiotoxicity and requires very
specific security measures. The recycling of spent nuclear fuel is once alternative,
wherein additional energy would occur as a plus point and additionally can reduce
the amount of material available.
The recycling of spent nuclear fuel is achieved through the separation of plutonium
and uranium from the spent nuclear fuel and then incorporates the plutonium as
fissile material into a new fuel called MOX. The actinides from reprocessing of
spent fuel can also be incorporated into new fuel and during the irradiation the
isotopes can change to shorter half life or transmute to stable isotopes as fission
products, the principal actinides in this work are: uranium (U), neptunium (Np),
plutonium (Pu), americium (Am) and curium (Cm).
The main objective in this work is to study and evaluate the recycling of actinides in
spent nuclear fuel, and incorporate these actinides in new nuclear fuel UOX or
MOX type and quantify the possible reduction in boiling water reactors.
The results show that recycling of fuel into BWR reactor is a viable option that
actually reduces the amount of minor actinides thereby decreasing the time of
disposal of spent fuel.
