Abstract:
ABSTRACT: A PDC drill bit selection guide is presented that uses unconfined compressive strength of the rock formation and a statistic analysis of a drill bit classifier for an appropriate choice of such. Results are compared to the selection and performance of PDC drill bits in three wells of the same oil field. The UCS is used to determine the hardness of each rock category proposed by the drill bit classifier, then the IADC PDC drill bits’ code is used to standardize the classification of the bits. Finally, based on the statistics the most recommended type of PDC drill bit for each rock category is defined. The performance of the bits is calculated based on the specific energy method and is compared to the UCS of the drilled rocks, to determine how optimal is the performance of the drilling. In all three cases, PDC bit selection was made according to the guide that we proposed. The three analyzed wells are in the same oil field, thus the formations that are drilled are basically composed by the same kind of rocks, nevertheless, it is noticed that the performance of the same type of PDC bit is different in each one of the wells. Multiple factors, such as the weight on bit and the rotational speed, have a significant impact in the performance of the drill bit; another important factor to be considered in the performance is the quality of the manufacture of the bit. The method of PDC drill bits selection applied hereby, using a selection table, helps the design engineer in the decision making of choosing an optimal PDC drill bit, reducing the time and costs of the drilling.
