Abstract:
ABSTRACT: This study aims to determine the effect of four types of bait on the presence and behavior of white sharks, Carcharodon carcharias, in Guadalupe Island, Mexico. The type of bait, sightings, behavior, and pictures for Photo ID were recorded aboard tourist boats that used legal or illegal baits during August-November 2012-2014. The data were analyzed according to sex, maturity and the total of sharks, in relation to the type of bait, with 6,145 sightings of 121 white sharks. The type of bait shows no significant effect on the presence of the white sharks, thus, a similar effectiveness to attract the sharks was observed. Regarding to the surface behavior, eight types of behavioral units were described. In addition, the evidence of a hierarchy based on size is also presented. Although all the baits had a similar effectiveness, the ethological analysis showed that the type of bait has a different effect on the behavior of the sharks during their interaction with the boats. The illegal baits generate behavioral patterns constituted by aggressive behaviors related to feeding, whereas the legal bait did not generate a defined behavioral pattern. The conditioning of white sharks was determined by the times of interaction and the consumption of baits. The 59% of sharks (n= 41) showed no conditioning related to the baits, 36% (n= 25) showed a low risk and just the 5% (n= 3) was determined under a high risk of conditioning. The results suggest that the actual effort on the use of baits have no effect on the conditioning of the white sharks, that all baits have a similar effectiveness and that there is no benefit in the use of illegal bait in the reserve; since, on the contrary, the fresh stimuli generates an aggressive behavior and increase the potential of accidents related to the divers in the cages.
