Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The shark Cephaloscyllium ventriosum, known as swellshark, is distributed from the Monterey Bay, California, in the Mexican Pacific and central Chile. Is considered an endemic species in the Eastern Pacific. It inhabits rocky or sandy bottoms covered with
algae in temperate or subtropical waters. In Mexico, it is captured by artisanal fishing.
There is no biological information on this species in the research area, Bahía Tortugas,
B.C.S. Mexico, so this study aimed to describe the reproductive biology of this species
with an emphasis on identifying the presence of breeding stock in the population and
to estimate the average size of sexual maturity (L50) used as a guide for the
management of the capture minimum size. A total of 95 gonads (68 females and 27
males) were reviewed. We analyzed the anatomy and histology of the reproductive
organs of both sexes. The total length (Lt) of the specimens ranges from 59 to 94 cm.
The greatest number of mature organisms was recorded in March. The sex ratio was
dominated by females (2.52H: 1M). This species of shark is oviparous and pregnant
females were found during all months of sampling. The mean size of sexual maturity
(L50) in females was 78.38 cm and for males of 74.24 cm in Lt. Histological analysis
concluded that the microscopic anatomy of the testicles of the species studied belongs
to the diametric type. There is a gradual zonation of spermatocysts in maturation within
the testis. In females, a functional external ovary with four phases of oogenesis was
observed. The oviducal gland, like other species of elasmobranchs, presents four
morphofunctional zones with evidence of sperm storage.
