Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The increase in the demand for goods and services can cause environmental deterioration, due to dumping of anthropogenic waste. Therefore, benthic foraminifera will be affected by an increase in anthropogenic activity. The objective of the present study was to determine the variability in the relative abundance of the benthic foraminifera with the purpose of knowing the possible changes in the quality of the sedimentary environment in the La Paz lagoon. For this purpose, the collection of three sediment cores was carried out, in places where there has been a change in the abundance of benthic foraminifera and organic carbon. The sediment cores with a length of 43cm (NLPZ1), 42cm (NLPZ2) and 25cm (NLPZ3), were sectioned at every 1 cm. The benthic foraminifera were separated and quantified with a stereoscopic microscope. A total of 8 genera Ammonia, Elphidium, Quinqueloculin, Bolivin, Peneroplis Textularina, Florilus, Polystomellina were identified. Determining that the Ammonia-Elphidium association represents more than 80% of the relative frequency along the nucleus. The Ammonia-Elphidium association was dominant with the increase of sludge that is related to an increase in carbon mainly towards the most superficial parts of the core of the central zone and the south of the lagoon, which suggests an environmental change towards recent years which is reflected in the quality of the sediments of the La Paz lagoon. The foraminifera stress index (FSI), which considers the quality of the sediments taking into account the abundances of benthic foraminifera, not tolerant and tolerant to environmental stress, indicates that the quality of sediments in the lagoon have changed in recent years, decreasing this characteristic, mainly in the central and southern part, where there is dominance of stress-tolerant genera (Ammonia-Elphidium).
