Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The hammerhead shark Sphyrna zygaena is caught incidentally in the oceanic fishing of tunas in the Eastern Pacific Ocean and in the artisanal shark fishery in Baja California Sur. It is currently on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as vulnerable and on Appendix II of CITES. The knowledge of the age and estimation of the growth rates allow to understand the population dynamics of the stocks or populations and to predict the effect of fishing on the species. The above is essential for the proper management of fisheries. In the present study, the age and individual growth of S. zygaena on the western coast of Baja California Sur was determined. I analyzed 132 organisms (69 females and 63 males) from the artisanal fisheries of Bahía Tortugas and Punta Lobos, B.C.S. from 2013 to 2017. Sizes were recorded from 66 to 292 cm TL with an average of 166.4 ± 70.03 cm TL for females and 121.7 ± 48.07 cm LT for males, with significant differences between sexes (p <0.001), with a sex ratio of 1.09H:1M (p <0.05). Sagittal sections of the vertebrae were made 0.4 mm thick and were observed on the stereoscope by immersing them in water using dark background and reflected light. A significant linear relationship was observed between the radius of the vertebra and the total length of males and females. In the intrareaders and intereaders counts a good precision was obtained (CV= 4.91%, APE= 3.78% y CV= 4.84%, APE= 7.96%, respectively). The edge type analysis showed a pattern that would suggest the annual formation of the growth marks. Ages from 0 to 19 years were estimated in females and 0 to 16 years in males. The growth model with the best fit was the logistic of three parameters finding differences (p <0.05) in the growth between females (L∞ = 338.5 cm LT, k = 0.18 year-1, ∞ = 7.8) and males (L∞ = 349.5 cm LT, k = 0.16 year-1, ∞ = 8.0).
