Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Potentially toxic elements (PTE) in the marine environment are a risk problem that must be assessed, monitoring and prevented in all fishing locations, and inclusive in those areas of conservation and protected. Moreover, ecotoxicological studies are necessary to ensure that the permissible limits of these PTE in organisms for human consumption are appropriate. The objectives of this study are to determine the levels of Hg, Cd and Cu in muscle, liver, fin of the silky shark adults and juveniles, from the artisanal fishery of Barra de Navidad, Jalisco for the period 2012-2016. Samples from 43 organisms were lyophilized and digested in nitric acid for analysis in an atomic absorption equipment and the results were validated with certified reference materials. The tissue with the highest concentration of Hg, Cd and Cu average were (on humid weight basis, p.h.) the liver (5.53 ± 12 μg g-1), (93.86 ± 198 μg g-1) and (67.2 ± 188 μg g-1) respectively. 9% (Hg) and 27% (Cd) of the muscle samples in the organisms analyzed exceeded the maximum permissible limits of the Mexican norm (NOM-242-SSA1, 2009). The results of Hg, Cd, and Cu in the liver were significantly and positively correlated (r=0.35, p=0.002; r=0.62, p<0.001; r=0.60, p<0.001, respectively) with the total length of the shark. In the muscle, only the Cd showed a significant correlation (r=0.61, p<0.001) with length. Significant differences were observed between juveniles and adults in the concentrations of Hg and Cd in the liver. The correlations between Cd:Hg, Cd:Cu, Hg:Cu, were positively significant only in the liver (p<0.001). The presence of the bioaccumulation of Hg, Cd and Cu in the liver of the organisms coincides with the results of works for this and other species of top predators.
