ABSTRACT: In recent years, the electric power sector has been one of those that has undergone
the most changes due to trends in the reduction of fossil fuels, this has caused a large
amount of green energy to be connected to the power systems, due to its intermittency,
it is necessary to count with enough generation plants based on the burning of natural
gas, because the power they generate it is easy controlled, and their response is swift, so
it is essential to plan and operate the natural gas systems and of power in an integrated
manner to ensure the proper functioning of the electrical power and natural gas systems.
This thesis work presents a methodology that allows solving the coordination of the
natural gas and power system through an optimization model that consists of the integration
among the electric power and natural gas systems, which is solved using a model
that uses the equilibrium concept. The optimization model is developed by the Karush-
Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions and seeks to minimize the operating cost of both systems
while restrictions of both systems are respected, emphasizing the line pack restriction and
bidirectional flow of gas in the pipelines.
The equilibrium concept is closely related to the Nash equilibrium since when there
are 2 or more optimization problems, where their decision variables are interrelated one
to each other, when they are solving, the jointly optimal solution found shows that none
take advantage of the other. In this case, there are only 2 problems: optimal natural gas
flows (ONGF) and optimal direct current power flows (ODCPF), which are coupled to
each other because the ONGF needs to know the gas demand of the power generators
(primal variable from OCDPF), and these generators, in turn, need to know the natural
price (dual variable from ONGF). The KKT conditions of both problems are developed
to find the optimal equilibrium point between the gas and power systems.
Two study cases are simulating, one of 3 nodes-3 buses, and another of 20 nodes-
30 buses. The analysis focuses on gas storage at the beginning of the time horizon, the
Integration of compressors in the gas system pipelines, and congestion on the electricity
grid. For the case of 3 nodes-3 buses, the ONGF and ODCPF models are analyzed
individually to verify that the equilibrium has been reached, for the case of 20 nodes-30
buses, a comparison is carried out with a multiobjective model that contemplates both
systems.
