Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The aim of the present study is to identify the opinion a group of students have about what a mathematician looks like and to explain possible sources of influence that generated such image. At the same time it seeks to identify the kind of activities these students think a mathematician performs. In this research a variation of the Draw- AScientist Test (DAST) proposed by Chambers (1983) method was used. As for the results, the predominant image obtained was that of a male teacher dressed in casual clothing with a modern hairstyle and who in a few cases was represented using lenses. Regarding his personality he was associated with someone cheerful, with extensive knowledge and friendly. It was found that the most common jobs for a mathematician are teaching or accountancy.
Regarding sources of influence for the image of a mathematician, it was school society which predominantly was reflected in many of the drawings.
