Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Rail grinding as a maintenance strategy plays an important role in controlling rail defects
caused by wear, manufacturing defects or cracks generated due to rolling contact fatigue,
noise reduction and the stability of the train by reshaping the rail. However, the roughness
and topography of the resulting rail surface after a grinding process and its performance
through coefficient of friction and wear rate during the running-in period has not been
extensively studied.
This work aims to evaluate the rolling process of different textures in rail material disk
specimens under different roughness parameters: Ra, Rq, Rt, Rp, Rv, Rz, Ssk and Sku. The
different textures were obtained by varying the amount of material removed and the grinding
work speed, commercial grinding wheels with properties similar to the grinding wheels used
in real condition were used. The tests were carried out using a pin on disk tribometer in dry
and grease-lubricated condition for rail system curves. The pin specimens were fabricated
from a wheel section with a standard roughness.
The results showed that, under dry conditions, rail specimens with rougher surface patterns
produced high values of coefficients of friction and wear rates. On the other hand, under
lubricated conditions, the lubricant does not guarantee a low coefficient of friction, due to
the incompatibility of the surfaces with the lubricant additives.
Additionally, a microstructural analysis was carried out on the cross section of the rail
specimens and images of the wear tracks were taken to identify the different wear
mechanisms and changes in the microstructure due to the grinding process.
