At the moment the cities are determined by two processes: the wearing down of
the paradigm of modernity and the globalization. These processes have caused the
critic to the principles, aspirations and concepts that govern the models and
instruments of modernity in the present context of the globalization, where doubt
that a rationally designed urban space is determined only instantiate external him
and that it is as well gets rid of all historical bond, social and cultural provided by
its habitants at the moment in which they modify, they adapt and they mean the
places that integrate it.
In this context a renewed interest has arisen to study to the urban space
through the urban images that are constructed by their inhabitants, in where the
places that have been appropriated physics and symbolically by the activities and
social actions that are made in them, become through its meaning the main
element of the analysis.
In the City of Mexico exist urban spaces designed under the functionalist
paradigm of modernity that have been modelled and appropriated physics and
symbolically by its inhabitants with the passage of the years. One of these spaces
is the colony Jardín Balbuena characterized by its places of sociabilización, some
that changed their original function and other that fit it to create points of contact
and social coexistence that constituted significant elements for their habitants who
comprise of the images that form the urban identity of the colony.
Therefore, this thesis studies and analyzes the urban image and the places of
sociabilización, with the intention to explain how the points of contact and social
coexistence of the colony Jardín Balbuena operate like significant elements that
they identify to the urban space.
