ABSTRACT
The Terminos Lagoon is located in the state of Campeche, it’s considered the largest
coastal lagoon in the southern Gulf of Mexico and it’s an important ecosystem
because the lagoon has a high diversity of species and habitats. It is a protected
natural area and its management plan allows the exploitation of its natural resources.
Recently, environmental changes which modified biological communities and habitats
have been reported, those changes could result in alterations in ecosystem structure
and functioning. In this sense, the aim of this studio was compare different status of
this ecosystem by modeling energy flows of the food web and its structural and
functional analysis. We used three models corresponding to annual periods of 1980,
1998 and 2011. Each model has 41 functional groups (included from primary
producers to top predators). The results suggest that the biomass to most functional
groups had decreased between years. The average ecosystem trophic level was the
same for the three periods (TL= 2.7), but the trophic level decreased slightly for some
functional groups. It was found that most energy flows decreased by 39.6% in 1998
and 57.8% in 2011 in relation to 1980. There were differences in trophic web
functioning due that energy flows and transfer efficiency among trophic levels were
different between years. In relation to 980, it was found a decreased in ecosystem’s
organization and development of 11% in 1998 and 7% in 2011. For the structural
analysis results indicated that there are certain groups such as seagrasses,
microcrustaceans, meiobenthos and echinoderms are the most central in the three
periods analyzed, as well as the prevalence of stable substructures. It was concluded
while there is a different functioning of the food web, the structure is maintained,
because there are substructures that have remained relatively stable, which are
associated with ecosystem stability. |
