ABSTRACT
The marine fish culture in México has progressed rapidly in the last decade. It is
performed in culture tanks with air flow pressure to generate movement in the
water and homogenize the physicochemical parameters (O2, S, ToC, etc.), and the
distribution of larvae. Larvae are sensitive to physical stress, particularly when the
water flow is poor. This critical condition occurs in the larval period, specifically in
the first week of culture, when most mortality occurs. The objective of this work is
to apply a hydrodynamic model to determine the flow regime of water, to adjust the
needs of the species in cultivation and increase survival. With the computing
platform based on Finite Element Method, the simulations were performed of the
conditions of water flow, with central air source (Tank A) and perimeter (Tank B). It
was observed that the circulation perimeter source is directed to the center of the
tank, with maximum speeds on the Surface and in the center of the tank, while,
with central source, circulation is directed to the tank wall with máximum speed in
the central part and on the surface. Displaying the movement of water in the tank,
was obtained using methylene blue and tracer particles, this helped to confirm the
trend of water flow determined with simulations. To validate the hydrodynamic
model were performed three runs of larviculture with yellowtail Seriola rivoliana.
With central air source was presents a larval survival of 6, 79 and 130 organisms,
with a pressure of airflow 0.17, 0.10 and 0.05 atm, while, with perimetral air source
the survival was 0, 46 and 65 organisms with a pressure of airflow 0.23, 0.17 and
0.10 atm respectively. The simulation with central air source, It provides a pattern
of more homogeneous circulation and with speeds that facilitate larval survival in
the case of yellowtail, this was confirmed in the three culture runs.
