ABSTRACT:
In the south of Mexico, the ciprinids Notropis boucardi, N. imeldae, and N. moralesi
and the profundulids Profundulus balsanus, P. mixtlanensis, P. oaxacae, P.
punctatus are distributed. All these fish show low abundances, mainly because they
are confined to springs and headwaters of the rivers, which makes them highly
sensitive to the disturbance of their environment. Although some of these species of
freshwater fish are distributed within the same basins, it is difficult to find them
inhabiting within the same locality. In order to explain its real distribution and detect
possible areas of high competitive pressure, the objective of this work was to
generate ecological niche models of some of the fish species belonging to the
genera Notropis and Profundulus to estimate their potential distribution, taking into
account account for the potential competitor among these species. The working
hypothesis is that the niche overlap (trophic and fundamental) explains the domain
of particular species of Notropis and Profundulus in the high areas of the rivers in
which they are distributed. A database was formed with a total of 234 records, where
23 belong to Notropis boucardi, 14 to N. imeldae, 50 to N. moralesi, 51 to
Profundulus balsanus, 27 to P. mixtlanensis, 21 to P. oaxacae and 34 to P.
punctatus, seven for P. sp. "Papaloapan" and seven for P. sp. "Tehuantepec".
Reference was made to special environmental coverings for bodies of fresh water of
30 "resolution. The modeling was carried out with the Maxent algorithm evaluated
with the area under the curve, the average omission rate and the Akaike statistic.
From the best models generated for each species, we proceeded to compare their
ecological equivalence in terms of fundamental niche. For the estimation of trophic
niche, bibliographic data were collected and studies of stomach contents were made
for the species that share distribution at the sub-basin level, whose overlap was
calculated with the MacArthur and Levin index and its amplitude with the Levins
index. The detection of zones of interest was generated with the superposition of the
layers generated by Maxent between species with high niche overlaps, taking into
account areas with average suitability greater than 0.75. Finally. with exploratory
searches the predictive capacity of these was evaluated by means of the Kappa de Cohen statistic. The three species belonging to the genus Notropis have a high
degree of similarity in their fundamental niches (0.76-0.84). P. mixtlanesis and P.
oaxacae have a significant similarity (0.77); species that also have a high overlap
are the species N. imeldae and N. moralesi (0.76-0.94), with whom they share
distribution at the sub-basin level at present. P. punctatus and P. sp. "Tehuantepec"
present a niche that only coincides in 4.4%. The trophic overlap between N. imeldae,
P. mixtlanensis and P. oaxacae is high (82-92%). The sub-basins of the AtoyacOaxaca de Juárez, Atoyac-San Pedro Juchatengo, Sordo and Yolatepec rivers, belonging to the "Río Atoyac" basin (RH20A); together with the Rio Mixteco subbasin (RH18Af) that belongs to the Balsas system, are the geographical areas that obtained the highest joint suitability values between Notropis and Profundulus species. The search generated eight new (Kappa = 0.61). It was possible to delimit areas of ecological and biogeographical importance taking into account the similarity of the trophic and fundamental niche. The low fundamental niche similarities observed between Profundulus punctatus, P. sp. "Papaloapan" and P. sp. "Tehuantepec" add evidence to consider these groups separate species. The observed absences during preliminary sampling show the deterioration that some rivers present at present and the possible new species of Notropis found in the Sierra Sur extends the recognized distribution of the Cyprinidae family in the continent. |
