Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The carotenoids are important pigments which are present in plants and animals. Within the process of the photosynthesis, they can be damaged by an excess of light in the plants. The objective of this work was to study the effect of two
ambients with different photosynthetically active radiation (RFA) in the
development and accumulation of carotenoids in ligules of Tagetes erecta. The
different ambients were with a mesh and without mesh. Under these light
ambients, the development of T. erecta were evaluated measuring the height of the
plant, number of floral buds and the diameter of fllowers and quantification of
ligules carotenoids accumulation (cis- lutein, lutein and zeaxanthin).
The results obtained showed that in these two ambients of light (with mesh and
without mesh) there are significant differences as far as the height of the plant,
number of floral buds and diameter of T. erecta flowers. The group grown without
mesh received greater RFA, UV radiation and different temperature, that under a
mesh. The first conditions lead to a reduction of the diameter of the flowers and
total content of xanthophylls in contrast to the ones cultivated under a mesh. These
results suggest that high irradiation of RFA and a different temperature in the
flowers of T. erecta affects strongly concentration, possibly due the fact that these
molecules are subjected to photochemical transformations. The analysis of plastid
ultrastructure showed differences as far as the content and disposition of tilacoidal
membranes of the typical form were observed in comparison with the cells grown
without mesh in which the tilacoidal system diminished and the starch grains were
more conspicuous.
