Abstract:
ABSTRACT: In the present work, the synthesis of fiber mats made of polyvinyl alcohol-chitosan based composite materials and silver and zinc oxide nanoparticles synthesized in situ in a chitosan matrix by the techniques of chemical reduction with glucose and sol - gel, respectively. The electrospinning technique was used for the preparation of mats of pure polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl alcohol - chitosan (60/40 % wt) as well as polyvinyl alcohol-Ag NPs and polyvinyl alcohol - NPs ZnO in the same weight ratios. During the preparation of the mats, polyvinyl alcohol of low, medium and high molecular weight was used and conditions were sought to produce fine fibers with the minimum amount of defects. The nanoparticles were characterized by Ultraviolet-visible Spectroscopy (UV-VIS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), X - ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electronics Microscopy (TEM). It was found that nanoparticles had a crystal size smaller than 15 nm. The electrospun fiber mats were characterized by FT-IR, TGA, SEM, TEM and an antibacterial evaluation was carried out by the viable cell method against bacterial strains of E. coli and S. aureus. It was found that increasing molecular weight and viscosity in the polymer solutions enhanced the quality of the fibers and decreased beads formation. Chitosan incorporation into the mixture decreases the size of the electrospun fibers, in contrast to the pure polyvinyl alcohol. It is concluded that the electrospun fibers of polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan NPs Ag and NPs ZnO generate compounds of higher physical - chemical features that make them viable composites for their application in the biomedical or environmental field.
