ABSTRACT: In the present study, a bioinspired surface was designed to increase the capture of humidity from the environment, as an alternative solution to the existing ones to mitigate the current water scarcity in Mexico City and other regions of the country.
The cactus of the species Ferocactus Latispinus was chosen and resorting to biomimicry, a surface was designed that consists of dados, grooves and thorns., with hydrophobic material at the base and tip of the spines. The base of the bioinspired surface and the two types of spines chosen were manufactured by additive manufacturing. To analyze the capture of water droplets, during the meteorological phenomenon known as haze, a display cell was built that has a humidifier for the supply of humid air and two hygrometers to record dry bulb and relative humidity temperatures.
Surface tests were carried out by varying its angle of inclination, 0° - 55°, for two types of
distribution of the spines on the base and one value of relative humidity between 60 and 80%. It was found that a greater capture of moisture is achieved and therefore a greater collection of water droplets when the surface is at an angle of 45 ° to 55 ° with respect to the horizontal. In addition, it was determined that the layer of hydrophobic material at the tips of the spines favors the nucleation of microdroplets of the fog. It was observed that the distribution in which rows of different types of spines alternate on the basis is the one that obtained the highest droplet collection coefficient. Finally, it was found that moisture capture will depend largely on the percentage of relative humidity, and the higher this parameter, the faster the nucleation of water droplets will occur. |
