ABSTRACT: In the Gulf of California, one of the most representative marine herbivorous fishes
of rocky-shore reefs is the giant damselfish Microspathodon dorsalis. Their diet and impact
on the macroalgae communities that have developed in their territories have been
studied. However, until now, they have not studied the chemical and mechanical strategies
that allow them to assimilate the algal food. The aim of the present study was
to characterize the feeding habits of the giant damselfish Microspathodon dorsalis from
the Southern Gulf of California, through diet analysis (sexs, sexual maturity, seasons),
as well as the description of the morphology of the alimentary tract (anatomy and histology
of the gut, and skull osteology) and physiological (pH), involved in the obtaining
and assimilation of the food. A total of 100 organisms were analyzed whose size structure
ranged from 15.7 to 31.2 cm total length (LT) and the sex ratio was 1.0: 0.8 H: M.
According to the index of relative importance (% IIR) macroalgae Gelidium refugiensis
of the phylum Rhodophyta as well as by Sphacelaria hancokii and Sphacelaria rigidula
of the phylum Ochrophyta, accounted for the largest proportion of the food (90 %).
This same pattern was observed according to the prey-specific method (% W). There
were significant trophic differences between sexual maturity stage (PERMANOVA: F =
2.58, P <0.05) and between seasons (PERMANOVA: F = 5.44, P <0.05), which could
be attributed to the change in the distribution of the species during its growth, and of
seasonal variations in the distribution and abundance of algae species throughout the
year. The Amundsen charts indicate a specialist nature in filamentous benthic algae.
Also, a trophic level of 2.07 was determined, placing M. dorsalis as a herbivorous species,
in agreement with the results of the dietary analysis. Regarding the role of pH, the
recorded values are not able to alter the structure of the cell walls of the algae. While
the morphology of the digestive tract presented a relative intestinal length (LIR) of 5.93,
typical of herbivorous species, in addition to a regionalization at the epithelial level through
the stomach and intestine. Finally, the description of the skull osteology indicates
that the mechanical action of the pharyngeal jaw apparatus has a decisive role in the
breakdown of plant cells during feeding. |
